What to Expect at Your First Lip Filler Appointment

Posted on October 26, 2023 in Filler by Lewisburg Team

Lip injections are a popular cosmetic procedure that makes your lips look fuller and more symmetrical. This non-surgical treatment is fairly quick and easy, so it can be a great way to achieve aesthetic goals with minimal risk and complications. It’s normal to feel nervous before your first lip filler appointment, but knowing what to expect will help to put your mind at ease.

Consultation

Before proceeding with the injections, your provider will discuss your medical history as well as your goals and expectations for the treatment. They need to ensure you don’t have any health conditions that may interfere with the procedure.

If you’re a good candidate for lip injections, the treatment can usually be done on the same day as the consultation. Your provider will probably take a “before” photo of your lips so that you can see the difference after the treatment.

Treatment

Your provider will start by applying a topical anesthetic, which will numb your lips. The anesthetic usually takes about 15 or 30 minutes to start working. The filler itself also contains lidocaine, another medication that helps with any discomfort.

Once your lips are fully numb, your provider will use a small needle to inject the filler. Most fillers we use (Juvederm Volbella XC and Juvederm Ultra XC) contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that your body produces naturally. Hyaluronic acid is very safe to use and is generally well-accepted by the body. The number of injections you’ll receive varies depending on your aesthetic goals, but your provider will likely administer several shots. The average treatment uses only about 0.5 to 1 milliliter of filler.

After Treatment

After administering the injections, your provider may apply ice or massage your lips to help them absorb the filler. You should stay at your provider’s office for at least 15 to 30 minutes after the procedure to make sure you don’t experience any nausea or dizziness. Because the treatment only uses local anesthetic, most patients are able to drive themselves home.

Swelling and bruising around your lips after the treatment are typical, but those side effects will go away on your own. Ice can help alleviate pain and swelling.

For at least a day after receiving filler, you should avoid wearing lipstick or lip balm, and you should be careful when eating, drinking, and brushing your teeth.

Lip filler can last anywhere from a few months to over a year. As the filler starts to dissolve, you can receive touch-up treatments.
