Botox

BOTOX® Cosmetic (onabotulinumtoxinA) is a quick and effective remedy that can temporarily diminish or eliminate facial lines and wrinkles that age, stress and environmental factors can produce. Whether you are looking to treat deep wrinkles, soften fine lines, or achieve a little brow lift, Botox is your best friend! Botox can smooth, fade or even disappear moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, on your forehead, at the base of your nose ("bunny lines"), and wrinkles at the corners of your eyes (“crow’s feet”). With the proper injection technique, Botox will leave you smooth and refreshed, giving you a more youthful, revitalized, and rested appearance.

Treatments are performed by our Board Certified Plastic Surgeons, Dr. Normington and Dr. Moya. Due to their extensive experience with Botox, they are considered "Diamond Providers" with Allergan (the manufacturer of Botox). This status allows our patients to participate with special programs and rebates that may not be offered to every practice.

According to Allergan, Dr. Normington and Dr. Moya perform more Botox treatments than any other provider in Central Pennsylvania, including the Harrisburg, Williamsport, State College, Danville, and Wilkes-Barre markets.

What is Botox and how does it work?

Over the years, frowning, squinting and even smiling gradually contribute to specific facial wrinkles (called dynamic wrinkles, since they are a result of facial expression and muscle movement). Injection of Botox into the muscles responsible for these movements blocks the nerve signal and decreases muscle contraction, relaxing the underlying facial muscles. This will not only visibly smooth your lines and wrinkles, but temporarily lessen any further contributions to deepening these lines and wrinkles. Botox is a purified protein produced by the Clostridium botulinum bacterium, which reduces the activity of the muscles. It is a non-surgical, physician-administered aesthetic treatment that can temporarily reduce the moderate to severe frown lines between the brows, on your forehead, at the base of your nose, and wrinkles at the corners of your eyes (“crow’s feet”) for up to 4 months. Within days, you may see a noticeable improvement. Results may vary. You can receive injections with Botox up to every 4 months to help you maintain the results.

The beauty of a Botox treatment is that it's a simple, 10-minute, non-surgical process. Just a few tiny injections. And there’s no recovery time. You can even do it on your lunch break.

Podcast Episode: What is Botox?

Skin wrinkles or furrows, such as on the forehead or around the eyes, are caused by the underlying muscles. Botox - or Botulinum toxin - is a medical chemical designed to temporarily weaken or relax those muscles, allowing the skin to be smoother.

Treatment

The doctors will administer several tiny injections of Botox directly into the muscles that cause those wrinkles and frown lines.

They will determine where to administer the injections by examining your ability to move certain muscles. The location, size, and use of the muscles that create a furrowed brow vary markedly among individuals.

No anesthesia is required, although the doctors may choose to numb the area with a freezing machine or anesthetic cream prior to injecting. Discomfort is usually minimal and brief.

You can expect to be in and out of the office without any downtime. You may see a marked improvement in the moderate to severe frown lines between your brows within days. Improvement may continue for as long as a month, and could last up to 4 months.

If you're pleased with the results of a Botox treatment, you'll probably want to get on a treatment schedule so you can keep on being pleased. If you discontinue treatment, the frown lines between your brows gradually will look like they did before treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does it hurt?

Patients report that being injected with Botox feels like a pinch. Your provider may use ice to numb the treatment area. Or, if you are concerned about discomfort, your provider may apply a topical numbing cream before administering your treatment.

When will I see results?

You may begin to notice results within 24 to 48 hours, with full results in 30 days.

How long does Botox last?

Results last up to four months for moderate to severe frown lines. Remember that results vary from patient to patient though, so our providers will plan your next appointment based on your results and goals.

What age should I start Botox?

It's not your age that determines when Botox is right for you, it's the severity of your lines.

The truth is, everyone's lines form differently. The timing can be influenced by a combination of factors, from cellular changes that may occur over time, to reduction of collagen, to genetic factors, or damage caused by free radicals from the sun and the environment.

Whenever your lines start to bother you, go speak with your doctor. They can help you determine if treatment is right for you.

What are the possible side effects?

Three percent of patients experienced eyelid drooping in the frown lines studies, one percent of patients experienced eyelid swelling in the crow's feet studies, and one percent of patients experienced brow drooping in the forehead lines studies. Other possible side effects include: dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight and dry eyes; and allergic reactions. These are not all of the possible serious side effects of Botox. Please see the Important Safety Information including Boxed Warning and Medication Guide and talk to your specialist.
