What to Expect at Your First Lip Filler Appointment
Posted on April 16, 2024 in Filler by Lewisburg Team
Dermal filler injections for the lips have become an extremely popular cosmetic treatment for men and women alike. This treatment is a great option for those who wish to achieve a fuller, more symmetrical pout. At Lewisburg Plastic Surgery & Dermatology, we are proud to offer Juvéderm Volbella and Juvéderm Ultra for lip augmentation. Read on if you are considering lip filler and would like to learn more about what to expect during this process.
First Step: Consultation
The first step to achieving the plumper lips you desire is to schedule a consultation appointment with our Nurse Injector. During this appointment, your injector will ask you questions regarding your medical history, as well as your goals and expectations for the treatment. This is to ensure you don’t have any health conditions that may interfere with the procedure. Additionally, your injector will want to confirm that your expectations are realistic and that a partner or friend isn’t pressuring you into receiving the treatment. Remember, cosmetic procedures should be done for you and you alone.
If you’re a good candidate for lip injections, your treatment can usually be done on the same day as the consultation. Your injector may take a “before” photo of your lips so that you can see the difference after the treatment.
The Lip Filler Treatment Process
To begin your lip filler treatment, your injector will apply a topical anesthetic to the lips, numbing them to ensure your comfort. The anesthetic usually takes about 15 or 30 minutes to start working. The filler itself may also contain lidocaine, another medication that causes numbness.
Once your lips are fully numb, your injector will use a small needle to skillfully inject the filler. Most fillers contain hyaluronic acid, a substance that your body produces naturally. Hyaluronic acid is very safe to use and is generally well-accepted by the body. The number of injections you’ll receive varies depending on your aesthetic goals. Treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour, depending on your anatomy and desired outcomes.
What to Expect Following Lip Filler Treatment
After administering the injections, your injector may massage your lips to ensure that the filler is evenly placed. There is no downtime required following treatment, so you can return to your regular routine right away. Swelling and bruising around your lips after the treatment is typical. Your lips may appear swollen for several days to a week, but ice packs can help alleviate pain and swelling.
Lip filler can last anywhere from a few months to over a year, depending on the formulation. As the filler starts to dissolve, you can receive touch-up treatments or allow your lips to return to their original volume.
