Understanding the Different Types of Breast Implants
Posted on March 06, 2024 in Breast Augmentation by Lewisburg Team
If you are looking to get your breasts augmented, your options may seem overwhelming. Fortunately, we can help. Breast augmentation is a common cosmetic procedure that many choose to appear more voluptuous or to regain volume after breastfeeding or losing weight. Regardless of your reason, we can help you find the right type and size of implant for you.
Saline vs Silicone
Saline
Saline implants contain saltwater and give a uniform shape and feel. If they leak, the body will absorb and release it without issue. They can be inserted without being filled and then filled once they are placed.
Silicone
Silicone implants, as the name suggests, contain silicone gel and can provide a natural, real-looking appearance. Unfortunately, silicone can be a problem in the body if these rupture. If you opt for silicone, Lewisburg Plastic Surgery recommends an MRI or Ultrasound every other year starting at 3 years post-op to check for “silent rupture”.
While both types of implants are FDA-approved, saline requires patients be at least 18 years old, and silicone requires patients be at least 22.
Other Options
Gummy Bear
These are form-stable silicone gel implants that come in a teardrop shape and retain that shape when the shell is compromised due to their increased thickness. They can provide a very natural-looking appearance.
Smooth
These implants have a soft, smooth outer layer that can freely move and are an option for both silicone and saline. Some consider these more natural since they feel and act like natural breasts.
Which Types of Implants Are Right For You?
With so many choices, it can be difficult to know what to choose, but your choice may be limited by a few different factors, including:
- How you want your breasts to look/feel
- Your skin’s elasticity
- Your general health
- Your risk tolerance
- Budget
- If you are combining the augmentation with other procedures
- Your implant history
- Age

There is no one-size-fits-all option when it comes to breast implants. Talk with Dr. Normington and Dr. Moya to assess which types of implants may be best to meet your aesthetic needs. They will also examine you to discern if you would be a good candidate for breast augmentation and what your best implant options are.
