Skin Removal Surgery

There isn’t a single skin removal surgery that will work for every patient. Each patient’s needs are different. The variety of procedures we offer allows us to help our patients find the best solution for them.

Many of those who come to us with excess skin after weight loss are just looking for what they consider to be a “normal” body shape. The procedure, or combination of procedures that lead each patient to his or her ideal body is always different. That’s why we offer a variety of procedures for our skin removal surgery patients. The more procedures you have to choose from, the better the chances are that you’ll find something that fits your body goals and your budget.

We offer skin removal surgery for the following areas:

  • Arms
  • Breasts
  • Abdomen
  • Back
  • Tights (inner and outer)

Where do I start?

When you come to see us, we will sit down with you and take the time to discuss your particular goals with you, so that we can formulate a clear and very realistic plan. We also talk to you about your overall health in order to make sure that you are healthy enough for surgery.

What if I need skin removed from multiple areas?

By understanding what bothers you most and what your long-term goals are, we can help you prioritize which procedure (or procedures) might be best for you and in which order to do them.  In some instances, we may be able to combine procedures, so that you have fewer surgeries from which you have to recover.

What is the recovery time?

The recovery time depends on the procedure(s) you choose.  Although we expect that you will begin feeling better and stronger within the first couple of weeks, we usually recommend restricting strenuous activity or exercise for six weeks. This will give your body the chance to heal properly, giving you the best long-term results.

What are the risks involved in skin removal surgery?

As with any other surgical procedure, there are always risks involved, so the best way to manage this is to minimize the potential for complications. This means getting a thorough assessment of your overall health, which may include communication with your family physician as well as obtaining certain blood tests.

This may also involve tight management of your blood sugar, for example, or smoking cessation, both of which can have a significant impact on the most important risk with skin removal surgery - wound healing.  Only when we are satisfied with all of these factors will we proceed with your surgery - we want you to have the best possible outcome and the best possible experience.

Aren't all skin removal procedures done the same way, no matter where I go?

Simply put - no. The same procedure may be done very differently from one surgeon to the next. One of the most important factors is the type of instruments used to do a procedure. An example of this is electrocautery, which is using electricity to cut tissue and stop bleeding. This has been used for many decades, and while it works well, it also burns and damages your tissues, causing significant inflammation.

We prefer to use HARMONIC instruments, which use ultrasound waves and generate much less heat, creating minimal inflammation resulting in less pain and drainage. What this means for you is a more comfortable and simplified recovery, since you will go home with NO surgical drains to manage with any of our procedures.

Our advice is to be thorough – do your research, ask a lot of questions, and then decide what is going to work best for you.  We want what you want - the best possible outcome, regardless of where you go for your skin removal surgery.
